Data Scientist

Leonard Mushunje is a mathematician, machine learning scientist, and quantitative researcher whose work lies at the intersection of mathematics, statistics, machine learning, financial engineering, and economics. His expertise combines advanced mathematical and statistical methods with modern computational tools to address complex challenges in finance, economics, public policy, and data-driven decision-making.

As Director of Research, Data and Analytics at the Global South Urban Resilience Forum (GSURF), Leonard leads the organisation's research quality assurance, quantitative analysis, and data analytics portfolio. He oversees the development of innovative analytical frameworks, predictive models, and evidence-generation systems that strengthen urban resilience research, inform policy development, and support data-driven solutions for cities across the Global South. He also guides GSURF's Data and Analytics Hub, ensuring that the organisation's research is rigorous, impactful, and grounded in robust quantitative evidence.

Leonard's professional career includes roles as a Senior Quantitative Risk and Research Analyst at Dura Capital, where he developed news sentiment models for default prediction, volatility forecasting models, and valuation systems. He also served as a Quantitative Research Intern at JP Morgan in New York, contributing to option pricing and index forecasting research. Earlier, he worked as a Quantitative Risk Analyst in the CEO's Office at the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe, where he developed the institution's multi-currency loan pricing model, and as an Actuarial Intern at Fidelity Life Assurance.

Leonard earned a Master's degree in Mathematical Statistics from Columbia University, where he also served as a Teaching Assistant and MA Statistics Council Representative. He previously completed a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (First Class Honours) at Midlands State University, graduating as the University's Best Male Student and the top student in Mathematics and Statistics. He further pursued advanced training in pure mathematics at the University of Montevallo in the United States as a Fulbright Scholar.

His achievements have been recognised through numerous prestigious awards and fellowships, including the Global UGRAD Fellowship, Columbia Statistics Departmental Award, MA2PhD Columbia Fellowship, Midlands State University Vice-Chancellor's Book Prize, Econet Wireless and CBZ Group Awards for Best Graduating Student in the Faculty, the Econet Wireless Scholarship, and recognition as a National Mathematics Olympiad Finalist.

In his spare time, Leonard enjoys running marathons and playing tennis.
